Obama touts record college enrollment rates — but is that really true?

President Barack Obama announced that a record number of students is enrolling in college. Great news, right? Not so fast.

Obama gave a speech at an Aug. 15 Democratic National Committee fundraiser in which he said this:

“We are seeing record graduation rates in high school — and college enrollment rates.”

Before you get excited, though, FactCheck.org says that’s not quite right. Students are graduating high school at record rates, they say, but college enrollment has been down between 2010 and 2014, though there was an increase in 2015.

The college enrollment rate increased to 69.2% in 2015, according to the The Bureau of Labor Statistics. But that rate was a dip from 2009’s enrollment rate, 70.1%.
